History

Ashford University was founded in 1918 in Clinton, Iowa, as Mount Saint Clare College. It was renamed Ashford University in 2005. Initially a women’s college, it began admitting men in32 years ago in 1986. Today, there are over 15,000 students enrolled at Ashford University Online from all 50 states and over 80 countries.

What is the Department of Education?

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is a Cabinet-level department of the federal government that is responsible for setting national education policy and administering and enforcing federal educational laws. The ED was established in 1980, as part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). It became a separate Cabinet-level department in 1989, when HEW was renamed the Department of Education and the arts (EDA). In 1965, the EDA was created as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” domestic agenda. It was responsible for administering several federal programs, including Head Start, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), and the Higher Education Act (HEA).

The ED’s main office is located in Washington, D.C., with over 4,000 employees working in offices across the country. The department’s annual budget is about $68 billion.
