Extended School Year
Extended School Year (ESY) is defined as special education and related services that are provided to a student with a disability beyond the regular school year in order to maintain the student’s skills or to prevent regression.
ESY services may be provided in a variety of settings, including but not limited to: the student’s home, hospital, community-based settings, or summer camp. ESY services are individualized and based on the student’s needs as specified in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Who is eligible for ESY services?

How is ESY determined?

The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) does not require schools to automatically provide ESY services to all students with disabilities who receive special education services, but many states have adopted this practice.
To determine whether a student is eligible for ESY, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team must consider the following factors:
-The student’s educational needs
-The degree to which those needs can be met during the regular school year
-The student’s anticipated rate of progress during the regular school year
-The student’s regression or loss of skills during periods when school is not in session
If the IEP team determines that the student meets the criteria for ESY services, then those services must be included in the student’s IEP.
What are the ESY service delivery options?
The Delivery of ESY Services describes the different ways in which school districts may provide ESY services. One of the primary goals of the IDEA is to ensure that children with disabilities have access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). In order to provide FAPE, the IDEA requires that school districts make available to eligible children a continuum of alternative placements. This continuum includes, but is not limited to, the following service delivery options:
-Regular classes
-Special classes
-Special education resource rooms
-Inclusion in a general education classroom
-Instruction in separate settings
